Understanding Tech Neck

Tech Neck, or “Text Neck,” is the strain caused by prolonged forward head posture when using phones, tablets, or computers. Tilting your head down increases pressure on the neck, leading to muscle fatigue, joint stress, and even spinal misalignment.

Causes:

  1. Long hours looking down at screens
  2. Poor workstation ergonomics
  3. Weak neck and upper back muscles
  4. Tight chest and shoulder muscles

Symptoms:

  1. Neck pain or stiffness
  2. Shoulder and upper back tension
  3. Headaches starting at the base of the skull
  4. Reduced neck mobility
  5. Tingling or numbness in arms/hands

Physiotherapy View

  1. Postural retraining and ergonomic advice
  2. Strengthening deep neck and shoulder stabilizers
  3. Stretching tight muscles
  4. Manual therapy to ease tension

Chiropractic View

  1. Spinal adjustments to restore alignment
  2. Postural education for daily habits
  3. Therapeutic exercises to correct imbalances
  4. Lifestyle tips to reduce screen strain

Prevention:

  1. Keep screens at eye level
  2. Take breaks (20-20-20 rule)
  3. Stretch neck and shoulders daily
  4. Strengthen postural muscles
  5. Use supportive pillows when sleeping

Bottom line:

Tech Neck is not just a minor annoyance — it’s a preventable modern health issue. With physiotherapy’s focus on muscle balance and chiropractic care’s emphasis on spinal alignment, you can not only relieve current discomfort but also protect your posture and spinal health for the long term
