Heat, Humidity and Spine Health: How Dubai’s Climate can affect your Back

While living in Dubai means dealing with high heat and humidity for more than half the year. This heat and humidity can put you at risk for serious muscle and back issues. Dehydration and cramps can lead to severe problems that affect your spine health.

Main Causes of Summer Back Pain

Extreme Temperature Changes

  • Stepping out from an air-conditioned room into humid heat is a shock to your body. This keeps the muscles around your spine tight and under stress.

Lack of Daily Movement

  • Because it is too hot to go for outdoor walks or play sports, sitting on the couch or at desk for long periods tightens your hips. Your lower back then starts compensating to support your spine.

Dehydration

  • Whether from living in dry indoor AC or sweating out fluids outside in the summer, your body loses hydration quickly. High humidity causes excessive sweating, leading to loss of body fluids.

Simple Ways to Protect Your Spine Health

  • Hydration: Drink 2.5 to 3.5 liters of water daily. Increase your intake if you are outdoors. Add electrolytes or sea salt during peak summer for better absorption of fluids.
  • Follow the 30-Minute Rule: If you work long hours at a desk, stand, stretch, or walk for 60 seconds every 30 minutes to unload spinal pressure.
  • Wear Supportive Shoes: Use supportive shoes or orthotic insoles if you spend long hours on your feet.
  • Shift Outdoors to Cooler Hours: Go outside in the early morning or late evening to avoid heat breakdown and fatigue.

Simple Daily Stretch Routines

Morning Stretches (Light Warm-Up):

  • Cat-Camel
  • Pelvic Bridging
  • Gentle Hip Circles

Evening Stretches (Release Tension):

In the evening, focus on releasing tight back muscles, slowing your heart rate, and preparing for sleep.

  • Take deep breaths and hold each stretch for 20 to 30 seconds:
  • Child’s Pose
  • Seated Hamstring and Calf (hold)
  • Ankle/Toe Movements

When to Visit a Physiotherapist? I

You should consult one if you experience:

  • Pain that persists beyond several days.
  • Pain that prevents you from performing daily tasks.
  • A “catching” pain that comes and goes, but is always there.

Stay hydrated, manage temperature changes, and move continuously to maintain a healthy spine in Dubai’s challenging climate!
